"Free? What's the catch?" The basic shopping_basket product is currently free, and there is no "catch". PongKen Software is a small software company that is strong in technical ability, but refuses to spend money on advertising and marketing. We figured the best way to demonstrate and display our abilities was to just offer this product for free. We know of no better way to advertise our skills. "How can you make any money if you give away your software for free?" We cannot make money giving away our software, that is right, but if enough people know of us and appreciate our abilities, it can only enhance our future prospects. The basic shopping_basket package is free and fully functional, but enhancements and customizations do cost money. Our shopping_basket_cc product (credit card capable) is not free and is, by necessity, customizied for each client. "So is your strategy of giving away your software for free actually working?" Well, yes and no. The answer is "yes" in that shopping_basket is currently being downloaded by three people every day on average. On the other hand, the answer is "no" since we receive very little feedback from any of these downloaders. In most cases we are not sure if they were successful in installing our product. In time I guess we'll find out, and in the meantime, we are certainly getting quite a bit of exposure. "Does your stragegy offer any other benefits?" We consider three of the most significant and important software innovations of the 1990's to be Linux, Java, and JavaScript. Although they are vastly different products, they do have one thing in common. They are all free. This seems to us to be pretty good company. It is also consistent with the original spirit of the internet. "Your installation instructions state that installation can be done with copy-and-pastes with a simple text editor. What do you mean by 'a simple text editor'?" The development environments we use at Pongken Software are Macs with a Linux server. On a Mac, a "simple text editor" is, not surprisingly, called "Simple Text". On a Linux or Unix machine, an example of a simple text editor would be "emacs". On a Windows platform, "MS Word" is not a simple text editor. It is an interpretive and highly constrictive editor. We have found that "Notepad" comes closest to what we would refer to as "a simple text editor" on a Windows platform. We recommend installing shopping_basket with Notepad on a Windows platform. "If I have questions during the installation of shopping_basket, may I ask them without being charged the installation fee of $80?" Yes. The installation fee is only for our active involvement in helping you install shopping_basket. Questions will be gladly answered at no charge. "Is this all of the frequently asked questions?" Yes. Please feel free to ask us more questions if you like.... |
