Java chat help
This page will show you how to use the most common functions of our Java chat client.
Connection guide:
1) Go to our Java chat page (A new window will pop up when clicking the link, so that you can continue reading this help page)
2) Wait for the page and the Java applet to load. Depending on the speed of your connection, it may take one or more minutes for the Java applet to load up. If the applet should ask you for a security approval, always click onto grant.
3) Once the Java applet is loaded, you will see the following interface:

4) Click into the text box next to "Nickname" and enter the nickname you want to use for the chat.
5) Click onto the "Connect Now!" button and wait.
6) Once you will be connected to the chat server, you will see the following:

7) You can start chatting at once. Just type any text into the field at the bottom and press enter to submit it. The box at the right of the screen contains the names of the other users in the chat room. If you want to stop chatting, just close the window.
8) Fort any other questions, read the FAQ below or mail us at help@sailorchat.cjb.net
FAQ:
The Java applet doesn't load/work
First, make sure that you are using Netscape 4 or Internet Explorer 4 or later and that Java is turned on in preferences.
Some people report problems with running the applet from within Explorer. We recommend Explorer 4.5 or later and that you set Security level to Low or Medium-Low. Macintosh users have to use MS VM for Java instead of Apple's MRJ.
In any case we strongly recommend using Netscape instead of Explorer for the Java chat.
What nickname should I pick?
This is where you get to be most creative, although in #sailors usernames can be "owned" or registered. To pick a nick, you simply type your nickname into the Nickname field on the connect screen of the Java chat client. You can change your nickname after being connected to the chat server by typing /nick newnickname into the chat box. For example, you can type /nick SailorMoon but I can tell you for sure that someone owns "SailorMoon". So as an alternative you could type /nick ^Sailor_Moon^ . You can use an underscore, quote, and/or dash to make your nick more original.
My nick has been changed to something like GuestXXXX
This means that the nick you've been trying to use has been registered to someone else and is owned by that person. You will have to choose another nickname by typing /nick newnickname, like /nick ^Sailor_Mercury2000^
My nick does not appear in the screen when I type a text
Your own nickname is never displayed in the chat text. You will only see your text like this:
> hello
However, the other people in the chat will see the text with your nickname, so you needn't worry that they could not see your nick.
How do I do an action in the chat?
Sometimes, you might see some colored text like this:
*action* DocTomoe is drinking a glass of water.
This special kind of text is used to symbolize an action done by one of the users in the chat room. You can do an action yourself by typing /me action, like /me is drinking some water
Who are the people with an @ (blue) or a + (green)?
People with a @ in front of their nick are channel operators. They have some special powers and are something like the police in the chat room. They can throw you out of the chat room and even lock you out if you don't behave properly, like exposed in our channel politics.
People with a + in front of them are normal chatters like you, but they have been given the +v (voice) sign to show that they are regular and well known users of the chat room. (It's like getting a medal for being nice in the channel.)
I can't find an answer to my question here
Either ask somebody in the chat room, post a message to our Help forum, or mail us at help@sailorchat.cjb.net
