IRC client help
This page will show you how to chat in #sailors using a regular IRC client.
Connection guide:
1) Open your IRC chat client. Popular IRC chat clients are mIRC for PC and Ircle for Macintosh.
2) Now you have to connect to a IRC server. In order to chat in #sailors, you have to connect to a Dalnet server. You do so by typing /server servername into the console, like /server spider.dal.net
3) Once you are connected to the server, you will have to set your nickname by typing /nick yournick into the console, like /nick Johndoe If that nick already is chosen, you'll have to choose another one.
4) Now you have to get into our chat room by typing /join #sailors into the console.
5) You are now in our chat room and may start chatting at once. Just type any text into console and press enter to submit it.
6) For any other questions, read the FAQ below or mail us at help@sailorchat.cjb.net
FAQ:
Dalnet. There are other servers such as EFnet and Undernet but you must connect to a Dalnet server. There are a lot of different servers running under Dalnet such as viper.dal.net or liberty.dal.net. Just type /server viper.dal.net or /server irc.dal.net.
What nickname should I pick?
This is where you get to be most creative, although in #sailors usernames can be "owned" or registered. You can change your nickname after being connected to the chat server by typing /nick newnickname into the chat box. For example, you can type /nick SailorMoon but I can tell you for sure that someone owns "SailorMoon". So as an alternative you could type /nick ^Sailor_Moon^ . You can use an underscore, quote, and/or dash to make your nick more original.
My nick has been changed to something like GuestXXXX
This means that the nick you've been trying to use has been registered to someone else and is owned by that person. You will have to choose another nickname by typing /nick newnickname, like /nick ^Sailor_Mercury2000^
How do I register a nick?
You type /nickserv register "password". Be sure to remember your password. Every time you connect, be sure to identify your nick to nickserv by typing /nickserv identify "password".
How do I get to your channel?
You type /join #sailors
How do I do an action in the chat?
Sometimes, you might see some colored text like this:
*action* DocTomoe is drinking a glass of water.
This special kind of text is used to symbolize an action done by one of the users in the chat room. You can do an action yourself by typing /me action, like /me is drinking some water
Who are the people with an @ (blue) or a + (green)?
People with a @ in front of their nick are channel operators. They have some special powers and are something like the police in the chat room. They can throw you outr of the chat room and even lock you out if you don't behave properly, like exposed in our channel politics.
People with a + in front of them are normal chatters like you, but they have been given the +v (voice) sign to show that they are regular and well known users of the chat room. (It's like getting a medal for being nice in the channel.)
What is a bot?
Essentially a bot is like a ro"bot". It is a special program having abilities to automatically respond to certain commands typed by users. For example, if you typed -ping to H_LeadCrow (our beloved channel bot), it would automatically ping you and message you a ping reply. Other automatic functions might include auto-kicking and auto-banning, auto-voicing, and much more.
