тех пор как были разработаны первые самолеты типа "Стелс", развитие военной авиации США было заморожено. Последний боевой самолет, взятый на вооружение вооруженными силами США - F117A "Ночной ястреб", самолет неведимка, дебютировал в 1983 году.
Сейчас еще три реактивных истребителя находятся в стадии разработки: F/A-18 E/F "Супер шершень", Joint Strike Fighter и F-22 Raptor.
F-22, разработанный для ведения боевых действий "воздух-воздух", должен был быть выпущенным прошлым летом, но правительство не инвестировало 1,8 миллиардов долларов на первые 6 самолетов, включив эти деньги в расход на следующий год.
В прошлом месяце президент Билл Клинтон выделил 1 миллиард долларов, на 6 единиц F-22. Самолеты успешно прошли тестирование. Но в отличие от предполагаемой стоимости в 125 миллионов долларов, цена за 1 самолет будет составлять 172 миллиона долларов.
Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), напротив будет стоить 65 миллионов долларов за 1 единицу. К тому же JSF, предназначенный для боевых действий типа "воздух-земля", может успешно вести боевые действия "воздух-воздух, поэтому необходимость в самолетах F-22 отпадает. Пентагон предлагает выделить 114,6 млрд. долларов на создание 1763 самолетов типв JSF за 20 лет.
Боинг и Локхид Мартин, соперничая друг с другом, собираются создать 3 разных вида JSF: один для нормальных боевых действий, второй - авианосец, третий - с вертикальным взлетом и посадкой - для Военно-морских вооруженных сил и Британской армии.
JSF также должен будет включать в себя последние достижения в технологии "Стелс" и компьютерном оснащении.
