design flaw

I've mentioned that I was working on a new design, but I've been procrastinating and putting off showing to it anyone. Well, if you've been to Stee's, Sara's and Beth's new discussion board site ThreeWay Action (and I highly suggest that you do - it's really addictive and entertaining grin)... You've seen my design. Or the gist of it, basically.

Prototype icon for new design Similar color scheme, similar iconography, similar font. Now, I'm definitely not saying that they stole my design or anything like that, since the new design has been languishing on my hard drive since the beginning of August. (Unless they're mind readers... Hmm...) And frankly, once I noticed the similarity between my protodesign and their site, I felt a bit relieved. I'd spent so much time tweaking the GIFs and trying out different alignments for the icons, I felt a bit - I dunno - married to the design. I'd felt that I'd spent too long on it to trash it completely, but now I have an excuse.

I'm mostly amused by the whole situation. Great minds think alike, or something like that.

This discovery about the design (and the decision to scrap it) came on the heels of another revelation: I really can't afford to pay for a dedicated server. The best and cheapest I've found is Dreamhost, but even $9.95 a month is too much for me to spend on frivolities.

So I signed up for space at Freespeech, and I'm shopping around for other ideas. Plus I have some new design ideas, now that I'm finally over the whole 50's spaghetti thing. grin

Of course, this doesn't preclude the idea of me purchasing another domain name and signing up for paid web space. (The domain name I originally bought, incidentally, is www.friedspaghetti.com. Anyone want to buy it?)

Anyway, there are thunderstorms in the area tonight, and I have to get up fairly early tomorrow. Ciao.
