fish

she's actual size - home

I bought fish today!

Little itty bitty fish. They had little aquarium cubes at the store: fish, a snail, a plant and some gravel for $16. I got one and put it on my desk at work. They're cute little buggers. I can't decide if they're danios or white cloud minnows, but I'm leaning toward danios.

It's fun staring at them. I used to have fish, years ago. My parents bought me an aquarium for my birthday, and I went to town on it. Before I got way too busy for it, I had a really nice freshwater setup. I even owned some pirhannas once. Baby red bellied pirhannas. They were cute, too. grin They looked so butch, swimming around with their teeth sticking out of their mouths like that. I named them Armand and Santiago, after vampires in Anne Rice's novels.

Feeding time for the pirhannas was a source of cheap entertainment for the neighborhood. When the pirhannas were small, I bought them guppies. When they got a little older and bigger, I bought them feeder goldfish.

The poor goldfish was tossed into the tank with no realization of what was going to happen. At first, the pirhannas hid. (I used to think they were afraid of their food, but now I think they were just sizing up their dinner.) Then you would see one drift closer to the goldfish... Closer... Closer...

And suddenly the goldfish had no belly. Where its belly used to be, there was only a gaping, crescent-shaped bite, trailing fish intestines. The goldfish didn't realize it was toast yet, and it would continue swimming around, listing from one side to the other. Eventually the other pirhanna would finish it off.

Yeah, I'm sick and twisted. Deal with it.

Anyway, I'm totally psyched about having these fish at work. I haven't named them yet, but the snail is named Snamuel. (Aren't I just the clever one.) I'll keep a close eye on the little guys, making sure no one messes with my fish.

My fish!

I may or may not be here tomorrow. I'm doing major software surgery on my computer, but hopefully it'll go ok. If I don't reappear in a few days, send out the dogs.

Slacking today.
