sleepy head

she's actual size - home

I woke up at 9:00 this morning and fell asleep again.

I woke up at 11:32 and fell asleep again.

I woke up at 12:15 and fell asleep again.

I finally got out of bed around 1:45pm.

I love sleeping.

There are days when I'm in the mood to do things, like go hiking or see a movie or repot a plant. Sometimes I'll just get in Dexter and drive wherever the road might take me. Or maybe I'll go visit my parents, or rearrange furniture, or gasp do the dishes.

Sometimes I just like to sleep.

When I was in college, the Saturday after finals was always my sleeping day. I'd call off work and just sleep all day. I remember one year I slept for 32 hours. I only woke up occasionally to go to the bathroom. I went to bed just before midnight on Friday and woke up - really woke up and got dressed - at about 7am Sunday morning.

I wasn't even very tired last night. But when I woke up momentarily for the first time this morning, I looked at the clock and thought, "I don't have anywhere to be today. I could just sleep." So I did.

Snuggled up underneath my electric blanket, listening to the rain patter on the windows outside, hugging the big snow leopard plushie that Dave gave me... It was the best place to be at that time.

I'm sure that to some people it seems terribly wasteful to just sleep all day long, or even just for much of the day.

There were lots of things I could have done today. I still have Christmas presents to buy, Christmas cards to make up and send out, dishes to wash, carpets to vacuum, and litter boxes to clean out. In fact, the reason that I did finally crawl out of bed was that I had laundry to do. But staying in bed was so much more palatable.

I'm not sure why I enjoy sleeping (most of the time, anyway.) It's not because I'm trying to avoid the "real world." It's not because I can't face the day. I think I just need to recharge every once in a while. Putzing around can be good for you.

Besides, Jaws does it all the time.

Looking Up

The Geminid meteor shower will peak (Eastern Standard Time) at 1PM on Tuesday afternoon, so Monday night will be your best chance to see some of these meteors. You'll need a dark sky, and wait for the Moon to set (at around 10:30pm Monday night.) Look to the west-southwest, and don't forget the cocoa!

______ of the Day

Today's thing you probably already noticed is that this entry is very self-referential - an invitation for you to browse my archives. grin

Skimming

I've got a serious backlog of Analog magazines piling up. Today I read "Digital Eyes" by Pete D. Manison, "Achromamorph's Burden" by H.G. Stratmann, "Take a Load Off" by F.Alexander Brejcha, and I started "Under" by Hal Clement.
