eighties kid

she's actual size - home

These feet were made for shopping.

Sammy is back in town, and we spent most of the day at a nearby outlet mall. I have lots of gifts left to buy, and I had no idea what to get anyone.

I did manage to find a gift for one of my sisters, but I'm stumped about what to get for my parents. I'll have to consult with Dad to see what to get Mom, and consult with Mom to see what to get Dad. I do this every year.

Hmm. I also need Christmas cards. I never buy the really Christmas-y ones, because everyone sends those. I like sending humorous ones, or really pretty ones. I bought some (really expensive!) cards a few year ago with dragons on them. Last year I bought cards with a bunch of animals standing around a tree in a forest. Very neat.

While we were at the outlet mall today we went into a candy store and found... drum roll... Pop Rocks! Yes! You remember those things: those little bits of sugar that boiled in your mouth when they got wet. You weren't supposed to feed them to seagulls because the gulls would blow up. Legend has it you can make a bomb with Pop Rocks and a can of pop.

Aah, back to the days of my youth.

The Pop Rocks brought back all that stuff I used to do. I am twenty-five years old, a product of the Disco 70's. But I was raised in the 80's. Do you remember:

  • Gummy shoes. (And Gummy bracelets, hair-ties, necklaces.) Those were the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever worn. The pinched and rubbed me the wrong way, and gave me horrible blisters. But I always wore them to school because they were cool.

  • Voltron. I remember getting up insanely early to watch this show. Recently I've seen reruns on Cartoon Network, and I am shocked at how silly the plots were. Every show was basically an excuse to get the lions to form Voltron. But back then I thought the show rocked. I still do, in a strange way.

  • Garbage Pail Kids. These trading cards were hot when I was a kid. Everyone had a set. My collection was pretty limited, but I had a few. Potty Scotty. Duncan Pumpkin. Barfin' Bart. Twisted little pictures in a tradable and collectable format. No wonder I ended up like this. grin

  • Transformers. Optimus Prime ruled. 'Nuff said.

  • Break dancing. I once watched one of my friends rip his pants from zipper to butt doing an on-the-back split. That is what break dancing was all about.

  • Knight Rider. Kitt was a pretty nifty car. But if he was so cool, why did he hang out with that dork, Michael?

I could go on. But I won't.

Does any of that sound familiar? If it doesn't, you either weren't around for the 80's or you were too busy being an adult. Just look at what you missed! grin

Looking Up

Today in 1971 the Soviet craft Mars 1 was the first spacecraft to crash land on Mars.

______ of the Day

Today's flavor is chocolate. Mmm... *drool*

Spinning

Nothing. Just enjoying the quiet.

Go Somewhere

Speaking of 80's cartoons, The Web's First Wildfire Page is a page about the cartoon Wildfire, which aired September 13, 1986 to September 6, 1987. If you ever watched this show, and then thought you might have imagined it (since no one seems to remember it), this page is for you.
