Abdullah Öcalan is the leader of the PKK
(Kurdish Workers Party) which has been fighting for the rights of the Kurdish
minority in Turkey or, according to Turkish authorities, committing terrorist
acts. Öcalan took refuge in the Greek embassy in Kenya. Turkish government
secret agents abducted him from there on 15 Feb 1999. He was condemned to
death by a Turkish court on 29 Jun 1999. On 25 Nov 1999 Öcalan's appeal
was rejected. The Turkish parliament has the responsibility to decide whether
to execute the man.
What I, John Canu, wrote to the Turkish embassy:
As a friend of Turkey, I believe that the
pacification of eastern Turkey will be well served by sparing the life of
Abdullah Öcalan.
What is certain is that executing him would
only reinforce the unfortunately widespread impression that Turkey, and
before it the Ottoman Empire, have no respect for human rights and for the
rights of ethnic minorities.
Please convey to your Parliament that this is
not only the opinion of governments and international organizations friendly
to Turkey, but also of many ordinary people like me around the world.
